As the nights draw in, there is a mixture of mourning for the long summer days and excitement for wool coats, the smell of bonfires and cosy evenings on the sofa.
It is officially Autumn now so most fashion mags seem to think that means it’s completely necessary to buy a whole new wardrobe. If you’re able to do that – congrats! – but for the rest of us, here’s some top tips on how to update and refresh for Fall, without breaking the bank.
All you need to effortlessly glide through Autumn 17 are these 3 golden rules…
1. Layer up
Layers are practical as the temperature drops, but you can make it a style feature too.
2. Target the trouser suit
Tailoring is big this AW17, so workwear feels like the perfect place for it to sit.
The key colour is grey so go anywhere from a dark charcoal right through to a pale blue-grey and everything in between. Checks are also everywhere, so explore black and white colour schemes to give you that grey overall finish. Try to get something with flex that looks good as a jacket on its own or trousers with a loose jumper.
3. Invest in the best
Now this is where you should blow the biggest bit of your budget.
A good coat can last you a lifetime and as long as you don’t go too crazy with the style, you will be able to wear it year after year. This year sees belted coats & buttons take centre stage, but simply look for quality and good materials that will keep their shape and you can’t go far wrong.
And if you’re still unsure, start with these…
Red is big for AW17 so be bold and go for these Lotus ‘Clara’ mid heel ankle boots £69.99 from Debenhams
Wear with: a tailored grey trouser suit
A staple every Autumn, Corduroy is on trend again and you can’t get much cuter than this Pinafore Dress £16 from George
Wear with: a lightweight mustard roll neck
Tick the check trend box as well as helping with layering and tying in red all with one smart purchase – this Checked Scarf £25 from M&S
Wear with: a black or camel calf length coat
Practical as well as pretty, patterned tights are big news specifically fishnets. These Micro Fishnet Tights £5 from ASOS manage to strike the delicate balance between sexy and classy just right.
Wear with: a loose knitted dress
Autumnal colours are my favourites and there was a load of Chocolate Brown on show in fashion week. Even though it’s a bit pricey, this Nia Quilted Velvet Jumper from Selfridges at £95 also delivers on the soft texture trend, so it’s like you’re getting 2 for 1 really…
Wear with: a fitted wool pencil skirt
